Garbage, Recycling & Organic Waste

Ladysmith is pleased to be among the first municipalities in B.C. to offer curbside pick-up of organic waste in addition to garbage and recycling pick up.

Garbage Quick Facts:

  • Limit - one container per household picked up every second week
  • Please have your garbage container to the curb-side no later than 8:00 a.m. on your scheduled pick up day
  • Acceptable containers - either a galvanized iron or plastic receptacle having a watertight cover, equipped with handles and of circular design and maximum receptacle size shall be not more than 17” wide - 75 litre (2.5 cu. ft.) with a gross weight of 20 kg (44 lbs).

Recycling Quick Facts:

  • Unlimited - pick up alternates weeks with the garbage collection
  • Please have your recycling to the curb-site in yellow recycling bags or clearly marked containers no later than 8:00 a.m. on your scheduled pick up day
  • Acceptable recyclable items are listed on the outside of the recycling bag - please do not deposit glass or styrofoam in recycling
  • Maximum total weight per bag should not exceed 20 kg (44 lbs).

Organic Waste Quick Facts:

Organic waste includes:

  • Any Food Item (fruit/vegetable scraps, meat/fish products, bones, pasta, bread, cereal, dairy products, egg shells, cookies, cakes, coffee filters & grinds, tea bags)
  • Any Solid Paper Product (soiled paper towels/tissues, soiled paper food packaging, soiled waxed cardboard boxes/packaging/paper, sugar/flour bags)

It DOES NOT include plastic, metal, glass, soiled diapers, soiled sanitary napkins, pet excrement or litter, styrofoam, meat tray liners or yard/garden waste.

Each household has two organic collection containers:

  • small container will fit under the kitchen sink to hold daily kitchen scraps,
  • large container can be used to collect a week's worth or organic waste and can be wheeled to the curb-side for pick up on your scheduled pick up day

Yard and garden waste may be deposited at Peerless Road Drop-Off Depot, 10830 Peerless Road, Ladysmith (Thicke Road. at Trans.Can.Hwy)

Pickup schedules, extra-garbage tags and recycling bags are available at City Hall, 410 Esplanade, open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 4:00 except statutory holidays.

  • All other recyclable materials may be taken to various locations listed in the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Recycling Directory. Directories are available at City Hall.

  • Peerless Transfer Station is located at 10830 Peerless Road (Trans Canada Highway & Thicke Road). Hours of operation are: Saturday, Sunday & Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm;
