Local EconomyLadysmith is one of the fastest growing communities in British Columbia. The Town has seen a 53% increase in population since 1990, with its largest growth occurring between 1991 and 1996. During that period, the Ladysmith population grew by 24.5%, or an average of 4.9% per year. A corresponding increase in the local business community has also occurred. In 2006, the Town issued twice as many business licenses than in 2000. With an expanding number of industrial companies, mostly engaged in forestry and related activities, Ladysmith is also a great centre for small businesses, including service as well as home-based enterprises. The largest economic sectors in the community are marine, forestry, aquaculture, services, retail and technology. In addition, Ladysmith has an emerging tourism industry and is a popular location for the filming. Areas for development are outlined in the Town of Ladysmith Official Community Plan. These include commercial development, directed principally to the downtown core and the south end (Coronation Mall), with complementary commercial areas provided to serve the mixed-use waterfront as well as local neighbourhoods. Additional commercially zoned land can be found along the Trans Canada Highway at the entrance to the South Ladysmith Industrial Park. Industrial development is designated in two main areas of Town. One park is located on the waterfront, the other in the south side of town. Both have close highway access, utilities on-site or nearby, and are properly zoned for industrial activity.
