Town, volunteers get to work on Forrest Field accessible walking path

The Town of Ladysmith, local service clubs and Mid-Isle Soccer, together in partnership, are starting work this weekend on a project to build an accessible walking path around the Forrest Field soccer pitch.

Forrest Field will be closed Saturday and Sunday to provide for physical distancing between the group of volunteers, which includes members of the Ladysmith Rotary, Ladysmith Kinsmen, Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladysmith and the local soccer organization.

In light of the two-day closure, the public is encouraged to visit one of Ladysmith’s many other parks and green spaces to recreate this weekend.

The accessible walking path being built by volunteers is identified in Phase 1 of the Lot 108 Park Plan Update.  Implementation of the Plan is among Council’s strategic priorities for this term and the Town continues to explore grant opportunities for future amenities.
Fundraising efforts by the service clubs and Mid-Isle Soccer have been ongoing for nearly two years and helped to lead to the building of the walking trail.

Ladysmith Council and the Town would like to thank all the volunteers for the time and effort in seeing this important community project through to completion.

Town staff completed the necessary site preparation work in advance of this weekend.

Part of the work over the two days includes widening the existing concrete sidewalk around the turf field to allow wheelchairs and walkers to navigate around spectators during games, as well as an asphalt accessible pathway from the parking lot to the walkway.
