Public Engagement: CommUNITY Together to End Poverty

The CommUNITY Together to End Poverty Hw-nuts’ulwum (As One) project aims to create a solutions-focused approach to reducing poverty in our communities by first engaging community members on their lived experiences.

In 2019, the Province of British Columbia (BC) released its poverty reduction strategy: TogetherBC: British Columbia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. The strategy set targets to reduce overall poverty in BC by at least 25%, and the child poverty rate by at least 50%, by 2024.

The Province has provided $5-million over three years through the Poverty Reduction Planning & Action program to support local governments in helping to reduce poverty.

As a result of this funding, the Town of Ladysmith received a grant to develop a plan, in partnership with Social Planning Cowichan and a Working Group, that sets both priority actions on poverty reduction and identifies actions specific to the needs of Ladysmith and Stz'uminus residents.

With your involvement, we can look directly at issues of poverty in our community and together create an action plan to help make a difference for those in our community needing support.

Here's how you can participate!

Take the Questionnaire - Add your voice and ideas to the poverty reduction plan. The online survey is open to everyone through either SurveyMethods or PlaceSpeak. You can also visit the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association or Stz'uminus Health Centre to pick up a print copy.

Do a One-on-One Interview - Please contact us if you would prefer to be interviewed to share your stories, experiences and ideas.

Become a Community Champion - Are you a community leader or influencer? We are looking for champions willing to share their time to spread the word and interview some of your contacts using the questionnaire as a guide.

Complete a Poverty Challenge - Sign up to challenge yourself, your family and/or friends to participate a poverty challenge:

  • Food allowance challenge: live off a food allowance budget based on social assistance for three days.
  • Public/active transportation challenge: use only public or active transportation for three days.
  • 12 hour "nowhere to go" challenge: spend 12 hours with nowhere to go.

Taking Action in your Neighbourhood - Share what you are already doing and inspire others to end poverty in Ladysmith and Stz'uminus through social media. Use your voice - take a photo, put a caption and post on social media.
