Always report bear and cougar sightings

Ladysmith, November 10, 2017 - As bear and cougar sightings become more frequent in our area, Ladysmith residents are reminded to always report bear or cougar issues before the animals become used to humans or conditioned to eat our food (including our garbage, compost and leftover tree fruit). The animal's life could depend on it – once bears or cougars become habituated to people, they may have to be destroyed.

If you see a bear or cougar, please report the sighting immediately. There are three ways to do this:

  • Call 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP)
  • #7277 on the TELUS Mobility Network
  • If the situation is not an emergency, report the incident online
    https://forms.gov.bc.ca/environment/rapp/

One of the most important things you can do to both keep your family and property safe and to protect bears and cougars is to store your food waste in an enclosed garage or shed until shortly before your scheduled garbage and compost pickup. Placing your household waste out too early can attract bears, cougars and other wildlife and create a host of problems. You can also:

  • Invest in bear-proof garbage cans
  • Pick ripe fruit on your fruit trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground
  • Remove bird feeders
  • Clean your barbecue thoroughly after each use

Ladysmith is home to many varieties of birds and wildlife and we are fortunate to have so many majestic animals in our midst. By working together to protect our furry and feathered friends, we can ensure our wildlife remains wild, and our community remains safe.
