Ladysmith's critical infrastructure remains fully operational

The Town of Ladysmith's critical infrastructure remains fully operational on Friday as the community cleans up from a major wind storm a day earlier.

Residents are advised that there are currently no water restrictions and no boil water advisory in effect.

Additionally, Ladysmith's Wastewater Treatment facility also has power and is operating as normal.

A storm-related power surge on Thursday caused power to be lost at the building for a brief period of time.

"All critical infrastructure is operational. Staff are working to prioritize community safety and are alerting BC Hydro to any issues they become aware of," said Mayor Aaron Stone. "Please be aware that although the storm has passed, dangers may still be present."

Due to significant damage sustained to the roof of the Machine Shop during the storm, residents are advised to avoid that area on Oyster Bay Drive and obey all road blocks.

There is currently no access to the Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery, art studios and classrooms as well as the Ladysmith Maritime Society facilities in the Machine Shop pending a building inspection.

The public is advised to avoid the Holland Creek trail system, which remains fully closed to the public due to fallen debris and the risk of hanging branches coming loose.

Public Works staff will be out assessing the condition of the trail on Friday.

The Frank Jameson Community Centre pool and fitness facilities remain closed as power is still out on 6th Avenue. Please avoid the area until the downed power lines are removed.

The Town is advised that BC Hydro has all available crews working to restore power to Ladysmith and all other affected areas on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

We recommend visiting the BC Hydro website for status updates and to view a list of outages in your area: https://www.bchydro.com/power-outages/app/outage-list.html
