BGC Central Vancouver Island expansion creates additional childcare spaces in Ladysmith

The Town of Ladysmith and BGC Central Vancouver Island have officially opened a new building addition to the non-profit childcare provider’s 220 High Street location, helping facilitate the creation of 12 infant/toddler spaces in our community.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, May 11, 2023, with Ladysmith Mayor and Council, BGC Central Vancouver Island staff and invited guests in attendance to celebrate the completion of the project.

The Town contracted MKM Projects Ltd. to construct the 800 sq-ft expansion to the existing building and install a new playground to accommodate the increased level of service delivery.

The design aesthetic of the new activity room and nap room area connects seamlessly with the surrounding environment through a tree design that stretches into the exposed rafters.  The building’s architectural curve wrapped in tongue and groove cladding is highlighted through the many unique windows, allowing for plenty of natural light to enter the space.

The expansion will not only provide more indoor space for BGCCVI operations, but also maximize outdoor space with the benefit of nearby Lions Park, available for the community, outside of facilities’ operating hours.

The project was funded through a $875,000 Provincial grant received from the Union of BC Municipalities and was completed on budget.

The grant program requires the municipality to own the building where the spaces are being created and enter a 15-year commitment with the Province to deliver childcare to the community.

Construction is now complete and BGC Central Vancouver Island will officially  incorporate the new space into its operations later this month.

The creation of 12 new infant/toddler spaces at the BGCCVI is an important first step in implementing recommendations from the Cowichan Region Child Care Plan.
