Downtown Facade and Signage
The ongoing preservation of the heritage character of downtown Ladysmith means that business and property owners must make sure that any changes to the exterior of commercial and multi-family residential properties in the 'Downtown Specified Area' are approved through the sign permit and/or development permit process before work takes place. The following changes to a downtown building requires consultation with Development Services staff: paint colour, signage, canopies, windows, trim, architectural details and storefront details. For more information see the Downtown Sign and Facade Application Form.
If you are undertaking maintenance, minor repairs or major improvements to your historic building whether it is a residence or commercial establishment, the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historical Places provides best practices for the preservation of the "character defining elements" of your building. Topics covered include exterior siding or masonry, roofs, windows, entrances and porches, and storefronts.
