Ladysmith receiving additional funding for Poverty Reduction Strategy

The Town of Ladysmith is receiving a $49,600 grant from the Union of BC Municipalities to carry forward the recent momentum of the Poverty Reduction Strategy implementation.

The Town and Social Planning Cowichan are working together with local agencies to deliver actionable steps for our community and make a difference in the lives of those needing it the most. The implementation of the strategy is further guided by the Poverty Reduction Task Force.

A key priority of Council's 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is developing comprehensive affordability strategies that reflect the needs within our community.

The latest funding received the Province’s Poverty Reduction Planning and Action program will focus on the areas of food security, access to education and employment, as well as transportation.

A highlight of this latest project phase is a seminar series for employers, businesses, and organizations in the Ladysmith/Stz’uminus area. The seminars will offer training, education and support to reduce barriers to recruiting, hiring and retaining low-income individuals seeking employment.

Additionally, the task force will look at opportunities for addressing the lack of transportation between Stz’uminus and Ladysmith. Challenges with gaps in public transportation have been identified in multiple community plans ranging from the Official Community Plan and the Ladysmith Economic Development Strategy, to the Ladysmith Youth Plan and the Age-Friendly Report.

The Town and SPC continue to connect participants to opportunities for taking action, whether through volunteer opportunities, donating towards a local organization, event or project related to reducing poverty.
