New crosswalks coming soon to downtown Ladysmith

Update - painting to take place on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 5pm as below.

The Town is pleased to share with the community that two new crosswalks are being painted in the heart of our downtown.

The crosswalk themes are ‘Every Child Matters’, helping to raise awareness of the victims and survivors of the residential school system, and ‘Ladysmith Remembers’, a tribute to our veterans.

To facilitate the painting of the crosswalks, 1st Avenue between Roberts Street and High Street is tentatively scheduled to be closed to traffic and no street parking permitted on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 5 pm.  Gatacre Street between 1st Avenue and the alleyway will also be closed at this time.

All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of rainfall.

During this temporary closure, the rainbow crosswalk will be repainted to include representation for the intersex community.

The Town looks forward to officially unveiling the crosswalks with invited guests and dignitaries at an event on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 10 a.m.

We are grateful to the Arts Council of Ladysmith & District who have also recently organized the creation and hanging of over 1,000 feathers in the trees along 1st Avenue.

The feathers compliment the new Every Child Matters crosswalk and serve as a reminder of the past as we approach National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30, 2023.

The feathers were hand cut by Steen Hjort and painted by students attending North Oyster, Ladysmith Intermediate, Ladysmith Primary and Stz’uminus schools.

The Home Depot in Duncan donated materials for the project.
