Town updates public on support services for homeless at Buller Street site

The Town of Ladysmith is in negotiations with our partners to allow for a temporary outdoor shelter on Buller Street to continue operating until September 30, 2020.

The Town's interest is in protecting against liability risk as we work towards a transition plan that ensures support for our most vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our homeless population has been self-isolating in a family cluster at a vacant Town-owned lot on Buller Street since mid-May.

The Ladysmith Resources Centre Association and COVID-19 Vulnerable Population Cowichan Task Force, through an agreement with BC Housing, are managing the delivery of shelter, food, temporary washrooms and outreach services.

A two-week extension was given beyond the June 30 deadline as details were finalized regarding the continuation of services and dedicated security.

The Town will provide more information in the coming days on the status of negotiations with our partners.
