Whether you're on land or water, Ladysmith is served by two volunteer-based and highly dedicated search and rescue organizations that are ready to assist you or your loved one anytime, 365 days a year.

Ladysmith Search and Rescue (LSAR)

Ladysmith Search and Rescue has been providing ground and swift water rescue services to the area since 1963. This volunteer-based organization and non-profit society is comprised of professionally trained and highly skilled members known as “Ground Pounders” who specialize in back-country rescues, swift water and rope rescues.

In addition to ground operations, LSAR also responds to emergencies on inland waters, including lakes, creeks, and rivers.

Want to join LSAR? All members must complete a 75-hour Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) course, which provides the essential skills needed to operate safely and effectively during a SAR mission.

For more information on the application process and requirements, visit LSAR's website.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station #29 (RCMSAR)

The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) Station #29 is an all-volunteer organization that has been providing marine search and rescue coverage for Ladysmith and the northern Gulf Islands for over 40 years.

Station #29 is one of more than 40 marine rescue stations in British Columbia that operate under the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue banner.

Want to join Station #29? Applications are accepted year-round and can be submitted at RCMSAR #29’s website.

Ladysmith & District Marine Rescue Society

Incorporated in 1997, Ladysmith & District Marine Rescue Society (LDMRS) and is a registered Canadian charity whose sole function is to provide financial support for Station 29. Donations to LDMRS are used for the purchase and maintenance of the boats, boathouse and specialized equipment required so the crew of RCMSAR 29 can continue to save lives on the water.

RCMSAR 29 and LDMRS are active in the community year-round, taking part in educational outreach, fundraising efforts, and local festivals. Keep an eye out for the Community Spirit on the water during events like the Polar Bear Swim, LYC Sail Past, Canada Day Fireworks, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, and the Christmas Sail Past.
