In support of Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10), Ladysmith Fire/Rescue is taking the opportunity to educate the public about fire safety in the kitchen, and actions we can all take to limit potential risks when preparing a meal.
Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association, this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is 'Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!' According to the Office of the Fire Commissioner, cooking is among the leading causes of house fires and related injuries in BC.
"A cooking fire can spread quickly; I've seen homes damaged and people injured by fires that could easily have been prevented," said Ladysmith Fire/Rescue Chief Chris Geiger. "By staying alert, avoiding distractions and not trying to multi-task, you can significantly decrease the risk of a fire starting in your kitchen."
The Fire Prevention Week campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
Ladysmith Fire/Rescue is encouraging all residents to embrace this year's theme and 'serve up fire safety' at your next meal.
Here are a few safety tips to keep you from having a cooking fire.
