Ladysmith Council met for a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Mayor Stone proclaimed January 2024 as Crime Stoppers Month in the Town of Ladysmith.  For more information on Central Vancouver Island Crime Stoppers, visit their website.

Next, Council, as the sole shareholder of the Ladysmith Harbour Economic Development Corporation, endorsed several recommendations as part of the corporation’s Annual General Meeting, including approval of the financial statements and the election of five directors of the company.

Moving along in the agenda, Council directed staff to prepare a borrowing bylaw in the amount of $13,500,000 for the Buller Street Revitalization Project.  The proposed project is located on Town-owned lands at 1st Avenue and Buller Street and will proceed to an Alternative Approval Process to obtain electoral assent prior to the borrowing of funds.

Moving on, Council gave the first three readings to Zoning Bylaw amendments, aligning with policies contained within the new Official Community Plan.

The amendments will apply to all properties currently zoned Downtown Commercial (C-2) and Live/Work Residential (R-2-LW) and properties in the Downtown currently zoned Highway Service Commercial (C-3).

The changes to the Zoning Bylaw apply to permitted uses, density, and height increases with setbacks.

Council will meet next as the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
