Town statement regarding waste collection services in Ladysmith

Ladysmith, BC — The Town of Ladysmith is advising residents of updated information regarding garbage container requirements.

In recent weeks, the Town’s waste collection provider, Waste Connections, has been deferring to the Town’s Garbage, Recycling and Organics Collection Bylaw, which currently states that residents are permitted to place one 70 litre (18.5 gallons) container at the curb during collection.

Under the Town’s agreement with Waste Connections, residents may place one garbage container at the curb for collection, provided it does not exceed 77 litres (20 gallons) in size and weighs no more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds) when full.

Effective immediately, Waste Connections will collect containers that meet the 77-litre size and 20-kilogram weight limits outlined in the agreement. This means residents are allowed one 77 litre container weighing no more than 20 kilograms. The Town’s website has been updated to reflect this information.

“We understand the frustration and confusion residents have experienced with garbage collection in recent weeks and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Waste Connections has informed the Town that they will be following the terms outlined in the agreement and that residents will be able to place one 77 litre-sized container weighing no more than 20 kilograms at the curb without issue,” says Nicholas Pescod, the Town’s Communications & Engagement Specialist.

The Town will be moving forward with plans to amend the Garbage, Recycling and Organics Collection Bylaw to reflect the size stated in the agreement with Waste Connections.
