Ladysmith, BC — The Town of Ladysmith is advising residents and visitors of traffic disruptions downtown on Monday, September 29, from 8:15 am to 2:00 pm, due to construction activities at the Island Hotel.
During this time, 1st Avenue between Gatacre Street and High Street will be reduced to single alternating traffic. The westbound lane between 12 Gatacre Street and 1st Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic. The sidewalk in front of 440 1st Avenue will also be closed. However, there will be signage in place directing pedestrians to cross to the opposite side.
The Island Hotel, a heritage-designated building at 440 1st Avenue, is being redeveloped. The original three-storey structure, built in 1900, will be replaced with a new five-storey building featuring ground-floor commercial space, 22 residential units above, and a rooftop patio. While the building will be fully demolished, its historic façade will be preserved and incorporated into the new design.
The Town thanks residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation while this work is underway.
