The Town of Ladysmith is advising residents that biodegradable bags—including those labelled compostable or oxo-degradable—are not permitted in compost bins.
Residents are encouraged to use paper bags or newspaper as an alternative.
On January 1, GFL Environmental took over responsibility for residential waste collection services in Ladysmith.
During the transition, the Town was informed about the provincial and regional requirements regarding compostable, biodegradable, or oxo-degradable plastic bags.
The Cowichan Valley Regional District, which operates the waste disposal facilities where the Town’s solid waste is processed, does not permit compostable, biodegradable, or oxo-degradable plastic bags or other similar items in collection bins.
This is because these materials do not break down properly and can leave microplastics behind, posing environmental and health concerns.
While this restriction is not new, it has not previously been enforced in Ladysmith. The Town apologizes for any confusion and frustration the new rule change has caused residents.
The federal government is currently working on regulations to clarify labelling and reduce confusion around biodegradable and compostable plastics.
