Regional FireSmart program provides guidance to Ladysmith residents

The Cowichan Valley Regional District, in partnership with The Town of Ladysmith, has received Provincial grant funding to support public education and free FireSmart home assessments.

This will allow residents to gain knowledge to make their homes and properties more resilient to the potential threat of wildfires.

The goal of the Regional FireSmart Project is to promote wildfire awareness, by conducting FireSmart assessments for households and neighborhoods that are in a high wildfire interface area.

FireSmart Coordinators will work with participating residents, educating them in FireSmart principles and options to reduce risk, while developing goals tailored to their property.

FireSmart staff will be present throughout the CVRD and the Town of Ladysmith providing door-to-door information where high wildfire risk is evident.

If you would like to be pro-active or book a FireSmart Home Assessment please contact the Coordinators at your convenience via email at

Further information and information session and resident application form, please visit the CVRD FireSmart Information webpage.

Overview of the Program

These assessments are FREE and allow the property owner to gain an understanding of actions they can take to reduce the risk of wildfire impacting their home and property. Simple changes can protect a home from ember transplant during a wildfire such as increasing the fire-resistant plant species and removing flammable debris up to 30 metres from a home.

Home Assessments:

Residents within the Cowichan region can contact the FireSmart team for a home assessment and arrange a time that works collaboratively. The home assessments involve a FireSmart Coordinator walking and assessing the home ignition zone, upon landowners’ approval. The assessment includes reviewing the home’s building materials and the region out from the home, where wildfires could threaten the house.

Neighbourhood Assessments:

Residents who are members of a Strata, Mobile home community, or part of a group of home owners interested in becoming a FireSmart community can contact the FireSmart coordinators for a Neighborhood Assessment. Similar to the home owner’s assessment, the neighborhood assessment is completed by a FireSmart Coordinator and the lead community volunteer.
