Town urges residents not to dispose of hazardous materials at fire hall

Ladysmith, BC — The Town of Ladysmith would like to advise residents that the disposal of hazardous material is not permitted at the Fire Hall.

Over the past several weeks, Ladysmith Fire Rescue has experienced incidents of individuals leaving fire extinguishers at the Fire Hall. In recent days, crews have also discovered other hazardous items left on the property, including marine flares.

Improperly discarded materials such as fire extinguishers and marine flares can pose safety risks if handled incorrectly. When items are abandoned at the Fire Hall, staff must take additional steps to ensure they are stored and disposed of safely, which places an unnecessary burden on emergency services.

Individuals looking to dispose of fully-discharged/empty fire extinguishers and bear spray canisters can drop them off free of charge at to Peerless Road Recycling Centre & Garbage Drop-Off Depot, located at 10830 Westdowne Road.

Marine flares, ammunition and other hazardous material must be taken to designated hazardous waste facilities. Accepting locations vary, therefore residents should consult Recycle BC to find the appropriate disposal site.

For information about what items are accepted for residential waste collection, please visit https://www.ladysmith.ca/our-services/garbage-recycling.

The Town of Ladysmith respectfully acknowledges that we gather and work on the unceded territory of the Stz'uminus First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
