Town of Ladysmith moving to Stage 2 water restrictions on June 1

Ladysmith, BC — The Town of Ladysmith is advising residents that Stage 2 water restrictions will be in place starting on Monday, June 1.

These restrictions apply to residents of the Town of Ladysmith, Diamond Improvement District, and Stz’uminus First Nation. Residents are expected to follow the Town of Ladysmith’s guidelines for watering times.

Stage 2 allows limited lawn sprinkling for up to two hours per designated day:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Thursdays and Sundays

Micro and drip irrigation, as well as hand watering of vegetable gardens and fruit trees, is permitted for up to four hours per day. Hand watering of ornamental trees, shrubs, and flower gardens is permitted for up to two hours daily.

Outdoor watering is not permitted between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. This is because watering in the evening, nighttime or early morning reduces water wasted due to evaporation and spreads peak water use.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, only pool and hot tub top-ups are permitted, while home, driveway, and sidewalk washing is restricted to commercial operators.

The following activities are still permitted under Stage 2:

Vehicle and boat washing

For a complete list of what is and is not allowed under Stage 2, please visit https://www.ladysmith.ca/our-services/water/restrictions.

The Town has been under Stage 1 water restrictions since May 1. The move to Stage 2 on June 1 is because inflow into Holland Lake has stopped and reservoir levels have begun to decline.

“Currently, water from Holland Lake is being used to supplement flows into Holland Creek in order to help meet the demand of the community’s drinking water supply. This seasonal change is expected as we move toward warmer, drier weather and increased water demand. Implementing Stage 2 restrictions now helps conserve our water supply and maintain stable reservoir levels throughout the summer months,” says Nicholas Pescod, the Town’s Communications & Engagement Specialist.

The Town of Ladysmith respectfully acknowledges that we gather and work on the unceded territory of the Stz'uminus First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
