Our Sustainability Vision

In 2008, over 600 citizens took part in a process to craft a vision of a sustainable future for our community.  The resulting Sustainability Vision is a road map for the Town and our residents.

Sustainability Program

We are excited to be launching our second year of the Town of Ladysmith’s Sustainability Program with the continued goal of engaging the community in water conservation and efficient recycling. Check back often for updated information on the Sustainability Program, including current initiatives, events, and information on how to get involved throughout the summer.

Garbage & Recycling

Ladysmith was the first community in the Cowichan Valley Regional District to bring in a curbside recycling program in 1995; and in 2003 was the first community in BC to introduce a curbside pick-up program for household organic waste.  The garbage we send to landfills has gone down by 60 per cent since 1995.

Water Conservation

Ladysmith takes the quantity and the quality of its water supply very seriously.  The Town has brought in a number of measures to upgrade the water supply system and to reduce water use in the community.

Energy Stewardship

Ladysmith has signed the Community Action Charter, which is a provincial government pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by the year 2020.  Council adopted our Community Energy Plan in 2008.
