Sustainability Visioning Process and Report

In 2008, over 600 citizens took part in a process to craft a vision of a sustainable future for our community. The resulting Sustainability Vision is a road map for the Town and our residents.

The Sustainability Visioning Report includes a broad-based sustainability vision and recommendations for the entire community, along with additional details for areas of special significance (i.e. Holland Creek, Ladysmith's historic downtown core and the waterfront lands).

The Visioning Report outlines 8 key pillars of sustainability for the Town of Ladysmith, which are deeply rooted in a triple bottom line approach to planning. They are:
1. Complete Community Land Use
3. Green Buildings
5. Innovative Infrastructure
7. Healthy Community
2. Low Impact Transportation
4. Multi-use Landscapes
6. Local Food Systems
8. Local, Diverse Economy

Since adopting the Sustainability Vision in early 2009, the Town has brought in a number of measures that support the vision.

Sustainability Action Plan

The Town published its detailed Sustainability Action Plan in November 2013, following two years of public consultation.  The Plan aims to build on and implementour Sustainability Vision, putting in place many of the key ideas, concepts and images that emerged from the community as part of the visioning process.  The Action Plan lays out the detailed actions, goals, targets and monitoring system necessary to implement the community's vision in a systematic and accountable manner.

Climate

The Cowichan Valley Regional District, has invested considerable time into researching the projected climate changes likely to be experienced in our region between 2050-2080, and has compiled a report reflecting their findings. This report presents information on temperature, precipitation, and related extreme indicators that, taken together, tell a story of how our climate is expected to change over time.

Information provided in this document is not intended to serve as design guidelines for future planning. Rather it is intended to describe a probable future and enable our region’s planners, engineers, policy makers, and community decision makers to make better-informed decisions on how to plan for and adapt to changes ahead.

The first step towards planning is understanding what changes are projected for our region.
