Waste Reduction

In Ladysmith we strive to divert as much waste as possible away from the landfills. By properly recycling, we can ensure that our waste is repurposed into other materials, reducing the impact on our environment. Currently, rates of contaminated recycling are at approximately 9%. Contaminants in recycling could be materials such as film plastics or wrappings, materials meant for the depot, or even unrinsed items. Even small amounts of contamination can cause the whole load to be sent to the landfill. Our goals by the end of the summer is to reduce the 9% to approximately 5%.

Follow along with our progress here, and do your part to ensure proper recycling!

Did you know that as of 2022, the number of recycled materials that stayed in our region to be recycled has increased to 75%?

The sustainability ambassadors have put together a virtual tour of Peerless Road Recycling Center to debunk some common myths about recycling and help make your next visit to the center easier!

Recycling Audits

For the recycling audits, we are going around town to see what people are struggling with most and how we can best support them when it comes to recycling. The Ladysmith community is lucky to have a recycling system that reuses waste products that would otherwise be sent to the landfill. By staying up to date with recycling protocols, community members play a crucial role in ensuring the effectiveness of this waste reuse system. Therefore, we are doing the recycling audits to offer advice on how to separate between curbside and depot recycling. For example, did you know that you need to bring soft plastic bags and packaging such as chips bags, bakery bags, etc. to the depot?
