Ladysmith Waterfront Area Plan honoured for planning excellence

Ladysmith, June 11, 2018 - The Town of Ladysmith's new Waterfront Area Plan has been honoured by the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) with an Excellence in Policy Planning - Small Town & Rural Areas Award. PIBC Awards for Excellence in Planning honour the best in professional planning work undertaken by members in five categories.

"Council is proud and delighted that the Town's vision for a renewed waterfront area has been recognized as one of the finest examples of professional planning work in British Columbia and the Yukon," said Ladysmith Mayor Aaron Stone. "Built in partnership with our Stz'uminus First Nation neighbors, Ladysmith residents, and waterfront area owners and tenants, the design for Ladysmith's waterfront provides for numerous environmental rehabilitation and economic sustainability advantages that will benefit our community now and for generations to come."

The plan was developed during a 15 month extensive community consultation process lead by consultant Dialog Design. The guiding principle in the creation of the plan was 'ltst uw'hw-nuts' ul-wum - 'we are working as one'. By the end of the process, over 1700 direct interactions with Ladysmith area and Stz'uminus First Nation residents and stakeholders took place regarding proposed ideas for the waterfront area.

"The PIBC award acknowledges the many months of hard work that went into ensuring everyone affected by the waterfront area plan was given an opportunity to play a role in shaping it into what it is today," said Ladysmith Chief Administrative Officer Guillermo Ferrero. "This broad consultation process was necessary to support the vision of the plan, which thoughtfully balances the desires of our community while also providing economic feasibility and sustainable growth."
