Town completes recycling audits on Orange Route

Last week, the Town conducted a third recycling audit, this time along the Orange Route. Only small amounts of recycling contamination were found based on the homes we visited.  Well done!!
Plastic bags and overwrap and other flexible plastic packaging continue to be the main source of contamination. We encourage you to take these items to Peerless Road Recycling Centre (10830 Westdowne Rd) or Junction Bottle Depot (149 Oyster Bay Dr) rather than include them in your recycling.
Soft plastics cannot go in curbside recycling because they wrap around sorting machinery which damages the machines and halts the sorting process.
Did you know that you must leave recycling items loose in your bin or yellow bag?  Workers are unable to empty these bags due to safety issues and this form of packaging leads to contamination.
A reminder that if you do not have enough storage to hold loose items, there are yellow bags available for pick up at City Hall.
So… what did we find on the Orange Route and where do all of these items go?
• Plastic bags and overwrap and other flexible plastic packaging – Peerless Road Recycling Centre or Junction Bottle Depot
• Soiled cardboard – Place in compost if soiled (covered in grease or food), if clean, place in curbside recycling
• Unrinsed containers – rinse and place in curbside recycling
• Bagged items – unbag items and place loose in curbside recycling
• Carpets – place in curbside garbage
• Glass – take to Peerless Road Recycling Centre or Junction Bottle Depot
• Metal doorknob – take to Peerless Road Recycling Centre and place in scrap metal bin
• Shiny party balloons – place in curbside garbage
• Plastic sand pail – place in curbside garbage (this is hard plastic which is currently non-recyclable under Recycle BC’s program due to its complexity and lack of end markets)
Thanks for helping our community become more sustainable!
