Sorting Out the Facts: Resin Identification Codes

We know that recycling can be confusing and want to help make it easier for you.

Every week for the next short while, the Town will be “Sorting Out the Facts” as we share information on common sources of contamination in our curbside pickup and other recycling related topics.

These topics are based the results of our ongoing recycling audits over the summer.

All about resin identification codes

The number surrounded by a triangle at the bottom of your coffee cup or water bottle is not what you might think.

These symbols, which range from numbers 1-7, are often mistaken as indications that an item can be recycled. However, these symbols, or resin identification codes are really telling you what type of plastic material that item is made of.

Here is a list of the materials identified by the resin codes 1-7 and whether or not they can be recycled in your curbside bin…

Resin code 1: Polyethylene Terephthalate - Recyclable

Resin code 2: High Density Polyethylene - Recyclable

Resin code 3: Polyvinyl Chloride – Not recyclable

Resin code 4: Low Density Polyethylene – Not recyclable

Resin code 5: Polypropylene – Recyclable

Resin code 6: Polystyrene – Not recyclable

Resin code 7: Other Plastics – Not Recyclable

Although it is important to learn which of these symbols indicate recyclable materials and which don’t, you should always check the accepted materials list on the Town’s website to confirm what can be placed in curbside recycling.

Hopefully learning what these codes really mean will allow you to feel more confident in your recycling!
