Notice of Construction: Roberts Street Watermain Replacement

Notice of Construction: Roberts Street Watermain Replacement

Ladysmith, July 5, 2024 – Crews will be replacing the Roberts Street watermain between 2nd Avenue and 4th Avenue starting on July 8.

In the Dirt Contracting will be carrying out the work, which includes replacing a 150 diameter AC watermain made of asbestos cement with a new 200 diameter PVC watermain complete with 25mm HDPE water services. Work is expected to be completed by September 27.

This section of watermain was prioritized for replacement by Council and Staff as there have been three watermain breaks on Roberts Street between 2019 and 2023 that resulted in flooding and pavement damage. Town Staff expect that breaks will continue without the replacement. The replacement project is budgeted for $658,880.

There will also be storm water drainage improvements that include new catch basins, manholes and storm pipe at 3rd Avenue and Roberts Street during this period.

As a result, local traffic only will be permitted in the affected area and parking will be restricted on Roberts Street until construction is completed.

Residents may experience the following during this period:

  • Construction activity and noise.
  • Trench excavation in front of your home.
  • Increased truck traffic.
  • Traffic control activities.
  • Delays when entering or exiting your property.

Traffic control personnel will provide assistance and direction during construction.

Garbage/Recycling/Organics Collection

In the Dirt Contracting will coordinate with the solid waste contractor to ensure curbside pickup is not disrupted. Residents are asked to place containers at the curb/boulevard for collection.

The Town understands that the construction will be an inconvenience for residents and will work to minimize disturbances as best as possible. Residents with questions about the project can contact Chris Pinnington, Infrastructure Services at 250-245-6414 extension 6256.
