Ladysmith is a charming small town with a thriving economy, vibrant downtown and picturesque waterfront, whose welcoming neighbourhoods reflect the quality of our citizens.
Downtown Ladysmith remains open for business as the Town begins the installation of nine bollards that will ensure greater pedestrian safety along First Avenue.
The installation of the safety bollards will begin on Monday, September 9, 2019 and take place on the high side of First Avenue between Gatacre Street and High Street.
The project involves removing a portion of the sidewalk, relocating underground infrastructure services as well as limiting on-street parking in front of the construction area in order to complete the necessary work.
The Town has consulted with downtown businesses within the affected area to ensure minimal disruption while storefronts and restaurants remain open for business.
We estimate the complete installation of the bollards and replacement of the sidewalk could take until approximately Friday, September 20, 2019.
We understand that this work will be an inconvenience to downtown shoppers, particularly those with mobility challenges, who are trying to access businesses.
The Town will create a pedestrian path and install ramp walkways leading to the door of each business in order to minimize disruption. Additional parking will also be made available at the public lot on Roberts Street beside the Chamber of Commerce (click image on left to expand downtown parking map).
The Town believes it is important to ensure pedestrian safety along First Avenue. The bollards are being installed to prevent cars from jumping the curb and crossing the sidewalk in the wake of recent incidents that resulted in damage to buildings, and near misses on personal injuries.
Future installation of bollards is at the discretion of Council and will be considered in upcoming budget discussions.
