Ladysmith is a charming small town with a thriving economy, vibrant downtown and picturesque waterfront, whose welcoming neighbourhoods reflect the quality of our citizens.
BC Summer Games Legacy funding has enabled the Town of Ladysmith to make improvements to the pool equipment for community members, and also give a major competitive boost to the Ladysmith-Chemainus Orcas Swim Club (LCSC).
The Town, as part of a joint application with the LCSC, was successfully awarded $10,000 in legacy funding at an event last summer to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the youth Games held in the Cowichan Valley.
Ladysmith was a regional host community for the 2018 Games and welcomed athletes, coaches, officials and spectators for field lacrosse at Forrest Field, beach volleyball at Transfer Beach Park and baseball at the Holland Creek Ballpark.
Frank Jameson Community Centre pool patrons will have noticed that new lanes ropes are now being used during the daily public length swim sessions - providing a better fitness experience by quelling waves and improving overall pool safety because of the buoyancy of the lines.
A reel was also purchased allowing the three new lane ropes to be safely stored out of the way when they are not in use.
More recently this week, four new starter blocks were also installed on the pool deck at the FJCC. These starter blocks are used in competitive swim meets and come with a sliding trackstart/wedge. LCSC swimmers will benefit from the training equipment enhancements as they strive for higher levels of competition.
In addition to the Games legacy funding, additional financial support for these improvements was contributed by the Town and LCSC.
Swimming is a major BC Summer Games event and the addition of these assets will support the future development of local young swimmers.
