Major wind storm impacts Ladysmith facilities, trail system

The Town of Ladysmith staff responded to multiple incidents on Thursday related to a major wind and rain storm with gusts reaching upwards of 90 km/h.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for East Vancouver Island. See the latest forecast here

Waste Water Treatment Plant

A storm-related power surge and resulting power outage at the Waste Water Treatment caused some effluent to overflow into the Ladysmith Harbour.

Power was restored to the plant by mid-afternoon and staff expect that the plant will be back in full operation shortly.

This should resolve the overflow situation.

Frank Jameson Community Centre

Frank Jameson Community Centre is currently closed as of 2:30 pm because the power is out at the facility due to a downed hydro line in the area.

The public is asked to avoid 6th avenue around the FJCC.

Machine Shop

A section metal roof has come off of the Machine Shop. High winds have also toppled a tree on Oyster Bay Drive, south of the Machine Shop.

Residents are asked to avoid this area.

Holland Creek Trail System

Please be aware that the entire Holland Creek Trail is also closed until further notice due to debris and falling branches.

Thank you for your understanding.

Residents are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel around town due to falling debris related to strong winds. If you don't need to leave home, please stay inside.
