Temporary outdoor shelter on Buller Street to continue operating until Sept. 30

The Town of Ladysmith is supporting  the ongoing operation of a temporary outdoor shelter on Buller Street until September 30, 2020.

The COVID-19 Vulnerable Population Cowichan Task Force and Ladysmith Resources Centre Association (LRCA) have provided a centralized support network to the homeless at the vacant Town-owned lot since mid-May. 

Local individuals are being provided with access to tents, food, washroom facilities, as well as the option to connect directly with outreach support workers.  A dedicated security team is also assigned to the site.

In recent weeks, a small group have made regular use of the services and amenities provided at the outdoor shelter and neighouring Cold Weather Shelter building, operated by the LRCA.

A priority for Ladysmith Council is working with our partners to facilitate ongoing assistance for our most vulnerable residents during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“A coordinated response to supporting our homeless and at-risk populations during the pandemic has given individuals the opportunity to focus on their health,” said Mayor Aaron Stone.“The Town’s continued support of these important outreach services during this unprecedented time and our next steps are going to be shaped by the progress on slowing the spread of COVID-19 over the coming months.”

The LRCA will continue to manage the local delivery of services through an agreement with BC Housing, and with support from the Cowichan Task Force.

All of the current services and amenities including a dedicated security team for the site will continue being provided as partners work toward the provision of permanent, sustainable housing solutions for our vulnerable residents.
