Town, BGC Central Vancouver Island mark Childcare Appreciation Day with project update

The Town of Ladysmith and BGC Central Vancouver Island (BGCCVI) are celebrating Childcare Appreciation Day as we move towards breaking ground on an important project that will create more affordable childcare spaces in the community.

Mayor Aaron Stone has proclaimed May 2021 as Child Care Month and May 21st as Childcare Appreciation Day in the Town of Ladysmith.  The Town is celebrating by extending a warm thank you to all of our local child care providers, and community organizations supporting young families.

The Town and BGCCVI continue to partner in improving access to childcare spaces in our community, aligning with Council’s strategic priorities which include strengthening collaboration and developing comprehensive affordability strategies.

Since receiving an $875,000 grant last July from the Union of BC Municipalities to expand the BGCCVI location on High Street, the Town and BGCCVI have refined the scope of the project and awarded the tender for the project management to MKM Construction.

The provincial funding provides direct support for local young families by creating 12 infant/toddler spaces in our community while also implementing recommendations contained within the Cowichan Region Child Care Plan.

The expansion will not only provide more indoor space for BGCCVI operations, but also maximize outdoor space with the benefit of nearby Lions Park.

The next steps for the expansion project involve obtaining Council approval for the required permits.
