Council Notebook for February 1, 2022

Ladysmith Council met for a virtual Regular Meeting on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 with Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw amendments for a proposed development on Rocky Creek Road among the agenda highlights.

The meeting started with a delegation from Frank Crucil and Toby Seward, speaking to these proposed changes for 1301 and 1391 Rocky Creek Road.

Following the delegation, Council considered the development application and gave first and second readings to the amendments, which, as proposed, would allow for a mix of single dwellings, townhouses, multiple-dwelling buildings and some commercial on the 4.7 ha site.

The existing zoning on the property permits approximately 75 single detached parcels, while the applicants have proposed 282 dwelling units plus commercial space.

Council directed that staff also report back on the outcome of the applicant’s consultation with Stz’uminus First Nation and the Province’s Archaeology Branch prior to scheduling a Public Hearing.

Next, Council appointed the Chief Election Officer and Deputy Chief Election Officers for the 2022 General Local Election.  .

Town staff have been participating in training sessions provided through the Local Government Management Association of BC in preparation for the October 15, 2022 election.

Moving on, Council referred the Poverty Reduction Task Group staff report to the next Committee of the Whole meeting for further discussion.

Council previously directed staff to outline the process and timeline for establishing a Poverty Reduction Task Group, as recommended in the Poverty Reduction Strategy, which was received by Council in 2021.

The next Regular Meeting of Council is scheduled for February 15, 2022 and will be held electronically through Zoom. Watch the Council Minutes, Agendas and Video page on our website for registration details.
